Rapid Metro to woo commuters

May 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - GURGAON:

Grappling with low ridership, the Rapid Metro will soon launch a slew of programmes to attract more commuters to its network that caters mostly to the working class in the Cybercity.

Making the announcement, Rajiv Banga, who recently took over as the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Rapid Metro, said that several programmes would be launched towards June-end to attract as many commuters as possible. He conceded that the current ridership, which stood at 30,000, was far less than expected. “There are a host of factors contributing to the ridership such as the origin and culmination of the network, behavioural aspect and the number of people in the catchment area. The same people who prefer to take metro train abroad are reluctant to take the public transport in India. We have taken several measures to attract commuters to our network and the way Gurgaon is growing, people will migrate to public transport at one point in time,” said Mr. Banga, who took over the reins from the outgoing CEO Sanjiv Rai.

On a question regarding problems on the Golf Course Road due to Phase-II construction of the Rapid Metro, Mr. Banga said that it was due to simultaneous construction and digging by several agencies.
