Raped minor girl attempts suicide; tutor arrested

A 13-year-old girl studying in a private school in East Delhi attempted suicide by drinking antiseptic liquid after her family found out that she was allegedly being raped by her tutor.

The accused teacher was arrested immediately after police recorded the minor girl’s statement.

The girl survived the suicide bid as she was rushed to a hospital by her family.

The incident was reported from Manadwali.

According to the police, the minor attempted suicide after her parents read some lewd text messages on her phone that were sent by her tutor on WhatsApp.

“The girl’s tutor had been sexually assaulting her for over two years,” said a senior police officer.

Though he usually taught the victim at her home, sometimes, he would take classes at his residence, the officer said. The officer refused to divulge any details of the accused teacher citing privacy and identification concerns related to the victim.

On Thursday evening, the girl’s mother discovered some lewd messages on her daughter’s phone and informed her husband.

An investigating officer said when the girl’s father asked her about the messages, she got scared and locked herself in her room. She then attempted to kill herself by drinking a bottle of Dettol.

Her father kept on asking her to open the door but when he grew suspicious, he broke open the door only to find that her daughter sitting in the corner with an empty bottle of Dettol.

She was then rushed to a private hospital.

The police received information about the incident from the hospital authorities and a team was sent to investigate the matter. After the victim recovered, the police recorded her statement and a medical examination was conducted which confirmed rape.

A case under section of rape and appropriate sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act was registered at the Mandawali police station.

The accused teacher was arrested at his residence soon after.

“He used to teach other girls residing in the area and we are trying to ascertain if there are other victims as well. Investigations are under way,” the officer added.
