The Delhi government on Wednesday said it had begun the process of launching penal proceedings against the L-G-appointed chief of the anti-graft unit, Mukesh Kumar Meena.
A senior government official said the proceedings against the Joint Commissioner of Police, Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), were initiated in line with a memorandum in this respect from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s office.
The basis for these, the official said, was allegations of assault meted out by Mr. Meena to his subordinates in addition to ‘not working in accordance with the provisions of the law’ as chief of the ACB.
The government said retired IAS officer B.S. Banerjee would oversee the proceedings against Mr. Meena, which included charges of ‘falsification of facts regarding the ACB Helpline 1031’ and ‘intimidating the CM with criminal proceedings’ for pulling him up in a recent communication.
In late October, the Chief Minister had sought a written reply from Mr. Meena on the allegations against him in reply to which he had been warned of ‘appropriate action’.
Prior to this, the Delhi government, had, through a notice despatched by the Commission of Inquiry set up to probe the CNG scam of 2002, attempted to impose financial penalties on Mr. Meena, which were later stayed by the Delhi High Court on account of the fact that the MHA was his cadre controlling authority and not the government of Delhi. When contacted, Mr. Meena chose not to comment on the matter.
