Police dilly-dally on NRI tweet issue

December 11, 2014 08:05 am | Updated 08:05 am IST - New Delhi:

The Delhi Police are debating whether NRI Nidhi Shah’s complaint against Shiv Kumar Yadav – based primarily on the fact that he ‘stared, smiled creepily’ at her – is “enough for the registration of a fresh criminal case against him”.

DCP North Madhur Verma had on Wednesday morning requested Ms. Shah through two tweets to forward the complaint against Yadav to the Delhi Police so that “the process of justice could be initiated”.

Tweets disappear

Delhi Police Commissioner B. S. Bassi had also confirmed that Ms. Shah had been approached and encouraged to send her complaint.

By evening, however, both these tweets had disappeared. According to a source, this was after senior officers realised that “the matter needed to be probed officially and in the real world instead of on social media”.

“The DCP, who is the sole Delhi Police official on Twitter, was reminded that he was allowed to provide information, but not conduct investigations, on the internet,” said a senior police officer.
