A meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s Standing Committee on Thursday gave its nod to a proposal to bring orphans below the age of 24 years and with no support of livelihood, in the list of pensioners.

Under this pension scheme, the children would be able to avail themselves of financial assistance of Rs 1,000 per month at the discretion of the concerned area’s Municipal Councillor.

The pension scheme of the civic body till now used to cover the physically challenged, visually impaired, widows and elderly among others.

An MCD official said: “Under the scheme, the Municipal Councillors may use their discretion to recommend the names of orphans, physically challenged residents, widows and people from other such categories to avail of the assistance.”

An application has to be submitted in the office of the respective zonal Deputy Commissioner and the assistance would become payable a month after it is sanctioned.
