At a meeting convened to discuss the issue of restricting vehicles older than 15 years from plying in the Capital on Tuesday, the transport department decided to issue a notification to this effect.
The transport department said its notification would seek to inform the owners of such vehicles that their plying in the Capital would be deemed illegal and that it would no longer issue fitness certificates to such vehicles from now on. “We will issue the notification soon,” said an official. The meeting was attended by representatives from the NGT, the Delhi Police, civic agencies, and the Delhi government.
An estimated 29 lakh vehicles registered in Delhi are expected to be affected by the notification, which comes in the wake of recent recommendations from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) . The NGT had on November 26 barred all vehicles over 15 years old from plying on the Delhi streets.
On November 28, the NGT said that the ban would also apply to the buses owned or under contract with Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Punjab, and all other States whose buses ply to Delhi .
Citing manpower constraints , the Delhi Traffic Police said that they could only levy penalties for illegal parking, but this had been found ineffective for drivers .
The NGT said that if a car was ‘towed away from Moolchand it should be sent to Narela so that the owner did not repeat his act’.
