Not in our name, says Delhi Assembly

The AAP-led Delhi Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution condeming the recent spate of lynchings in the “name of religion” across the country.

This comes a day after civil society and other citizens gathered at Jantar Mantar to protest against mob violence.

Starting off the discussion, Chandni Chowk MLA Alka Lamba said she and other MLAs, including Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, had attended Wednesday’s “Not in my name” protest at Jantar Mantar. Hitting out at BJP, Ms. Lamba said that most lynchings, especially on the pretext of cow protection, had taken place in BJP-ruled States and involved victims who were Muslims or Dalits.

Mr. Sisodia attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the lynchings, saying that these cases were a distraction to hide the ruling party’s inability to deliver on its promises.

As per the resolution passed, the Delhi Assembly “condemns in strongest possible terms the mindless mob violence being unleashed across the country in the name of religion”.
