‘No device to test for beef’

While incidents of violence in the name of ‘gau raksha’ or cow protection have become commonplace in the country, a senior official of the Forensic Science Laboratory claimed that the institute does not have the infrastructure needed to confirm whether a particular meat belongs to a cow.

‘No instruments’

“Beef is a big issue in the country, but the instruments needed to identify beef are not available in Delhi,” he said, adding that the identification process is complicated.

He said that only a few veterinary labs in the country have the required infrastructure. He also advocated an expansion of the labs.
