Ria’s family has placed the blame squarely on the police whom they had approached in the past with a complaint against Aadil. The police’s alleged inaction into a complaint of stalking and harassment against Aadil gave him the opportunity to first flee the city and then return to kill her, they said.
No FIR registered
While the family said the complaint was submitted in March, the police said it was late April. In any case, well over a couple of months passed between the date of complaint and the day of murder, with the police not even having registered an FIR in the time.
“My sister would have been alive today had the police been a little more proactive in chasing him down. They are now struggling to even catch him. He should be arrested and hanged as soon as possible. I wish what happened to my sister does not happen to others,” said Komal, her elder sister.
Probe has revealed that Aadil had known Ria for over a year and they had been in touch in the past. The family, however, said he had been harassing her and would often threaten her.
Harassment in bus
On what triggered the complaint, Ria’s elder brother Ashish said that Aadil had once entered a DTC bus, in which she was on her way towards the airhostess training institute in Preet Vihar, and misbehaved with her.
“She first informed those at her institute who took her to the Preet Vihar police station. The policemen there told her to go to Mansarovar Park police station instead, where she submitted a written complaint,” said Ashish.
The copy of the complaint that was with them was taken by the police after the murder. DCP (Shahadra) Nupur Prasad said the allegations were being looked into and an inquiry has been initiated.
“I have ordered an inquiry to find out if appropriate legal action was taken in the complaint filed by the victim in April. The report will be submitted within 24 hours,” she said. Officers said after the complaint was made, the police raided Adil’s house which is close to the victim’s but it was found that he had fled to Gujarat by then.
