Taking cognisance of a murder that took place inside the Ambedkar Nagar police station on August 22, the National Human Rights Commission on Friday ordered an inquiry into the incident.
The commission directed its DIG (Investigation) submit a report within eight weeks. Apart from media reports about the incident, the NHRC also received information about the murder from the Delhi Police as all custodial deaths are supposed to be reported to the human rights panel.
Anil was allegedly killed by his neighbour Vishal with a file needle inside the police station.
The duo had got into a fight on August 21 just as Anil’s family was wrapping up the birthday celebrations of his 12-year-old daughter.
The two got into an argument that became violent, leading to the police taking them both to the Ambedkar Nagar police station around 1 a.m. on August 22.
By 3 a.m., Anil’s family was informed that Vishal had allegedly stabbed Anil using a file needle.
While the Delhi Police suspended the Investigating Officer Brahm Prakash and constable Ashok, the victim’s family has maintained that their appeals to the police to keep the two men in separate rooms went unheeded.
