NHRC notice to Police Commissioner

August 06, 2013 11:52 am | Updated 11:52 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Taking cognisance of media reports on the alleged assault on an auto-rickshaw driver by policemen at Seelampur police station here on July 31, the National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Delhi Police Commissioner and Additional Commissioner of Police (North-East district).

According to a statement issued by the NHRC on Monday, the Commission has called for reports within two weeks as the constable is also accused of snatching Rs.10,000 from the victim, Chand Mohammad.

On the day of the incident some people playing cards on a footpath ran away when they saw the police personnel.

Chand, a purported bystander, was caught and the policemen allegedly demanded money and upon his denial of any involvement took him to the police station and beat him before snatching from him the money he was carrying to repay the instalment of his auto-rickshaw loan.

“The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim,” said the statement.
