July 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The death of a vegetable vendor due to electrocution at a public toilet in Shakarpur recently has caught the attention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter.

Vegetable vendor Kishan Lal got electrocuted due to current in the railing at a public toilet on June 24. Several complaints were reportedly made earlier to the power distribution company about the electric current, but no action was taken.

A criminal case was also registered at the Shakarpur police station in connection with the incident.

The commission has observed that the reports about the incident, if true, had raised a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim. It has issued notices to the Delhi Chief Secretary and the Commissioner of Police, calling for a detailed report in four weeks.
