An Air India Delhi-New York flight had return to the capital's Indira Gandhi International airport on Saturday, a few hours after its take off, due to a medical emergency on board.
The Air India flight (AI 101) took off from Delhi's IGI airport at 1.56 am on Saturday for New York. Around two and a half hours after being airborne, a passenger fell seriously sick and keeping the emergency in mind, the pilot decided to return to Delhi.
The Boeing 777 long-haul, non-stop flight with 327 passengers on board came back to Delhi and touched down at the airport at 5 am. The passenger was rushed to a nearby hospital upon arrival.
An Air India spokesperson said that sometime after the flight took off, a passenger on board complained of breathlessness and was in need of urgent medical attention. “Showing a high degree of sensitivity, Commander Captain Zoya Agarwal decided to return to Delhi,” he said. “The pilot demonstrated Air India's care and concern for passenger's safety and well being,” he said.
“The passenger was rushed to urgent medical care and the flight again departed for New York after some time,” he said. “Timely action by the pilot helped provide urgent medicare and the passenger’s condition is now stable,” he said.
