New excise policy unveiled

August 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 12:35 pm IST - New Delhi:

The Delhi government unveiled a new excise policy on Saturday paving the way for establishment of microbreweries at hotels and restaurants across the Capital.

Fortunately for the first category of Delhiites, the government said it had decided not to increase excise on liquor given what it termed a “substantial increase in excise” in the last two financial years.

For the second category, the policy aimed at ending the decades-old “inspector raj”.

“Allowing the establishment of microbreweries will make available to the citizens of Delhi, fresh beer in different flavours, as is available in other places like Gurgaon and Bengaluru,” said a senior government official.

“Under the new excise policy, it has been decided to do away with the present renewal system of excise licence for hotels, clubs and restaurants, and merely on payment of prescribed annual fee, the licence holder will be allowed to continue functioning,” the official said.
