Women’s security in the Capital and modernisation of the Delhi Police were some of the key issues discussed during Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s first visit to the Police Headquarters here after assuming charge.

On Monday, Mr. Singh held a meeting with senior Delhi Police officers at the conference hall of the headquarters. He was accompanied by Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami and Joint Secretary (Union Territory) lqbal Singh Chahal. The administrative control of the Delhi Police is with the Centre.

After the meeting, Mr. Singh told journalists: “I discussed with the senior police officials about how we can modernise the force to tackle the law and order problems in the Capital.”

During the meeting, which lasted for a little less than two hours, Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi apprised the Home Minister about some of the steps introduced by the police through a brief presentation, which also showcased the force’s achievements in the recent past.

He was briefed about the functioning of the force and was given a tour of the Delhi Police’s Central Police Control Room (CPCR) and Integrated Command Control Co-ordination and Communication Centre (C4i). Special Commissioner of Police (Operations) S. Sundari Nanda explained the functioning of the CPCR and C4i, including the Women Helpline Desk (1091).

Projects such as Safe City Project, creation of additional posts, incentives for policemen posted in specialised high-risk units and additional requirement of funds for vehicles and police housing are all awaiting consideration of the Central Government and these matters were raised during the meeting.

Addressing the meeting, which was attended by officers of the rank of Additional Commissioners and above as well as Deputy Commissioners in charge of districts, Mr. Singh stressed the need to firmly deal with crimes against women.

“The Home Minister appreciated the Delhi Police for its professional handling of law and order situations. In particular, he complimented the officers and men of the Delhi Police for incident-free conduct of the Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha elections. He assured us that he would give due consideration to the pending proposals so that a modern police machinery is provided to the citizens,” said a statement issued by the Delhi Police. It added that Mr. Singh emphasised on making the Delhi Police a role model for metropolitan policing.
