A 30-year-old man died after falling into a pit allegedly dug by BSES in south Delhi’s Neb Sarai early on Saturday morning. The police have registered an FIR and have begun investigating the matter.
On Saturday, around 12.30 a.m., Ravi Lal — a resident of Sangam Vihar who worked as a driver in a private firm in Gurugram — was returning from work when he fell into the 8-feet deep pit dug right outside his street on Asthal Mandir Road, a resident of the area Brijpal Upadhyay told The Hindu . “The pit was dug by BSES and there are over seven pits like that. He fell into the one outside the street and couldn’t come out,” he said.
Call unanswered
He also said that the family called him when he didn’t come home at his usual time but he didn’t attend the call.
“They got to know when they heard noises of people having found a body inside the pit. When they reached the spot, they found it was Ravi,” said Mr. Upadhyay. The body was taken to AIIMS for autopsy.
No ‘caution’ sign
The police said that that the pit was found to be dug by BSES. Placed next to the pit was a machine, a part of which was fixed in the pit. The contractor of the work did not put a notice around the pit mentioning safety precautions or a sign cautioning people about the work in progress.
“Prima facie, the cause of death could be the negligence by authorities,” said a police officer, adding that a case has been registered. The deceased is survived by his wife and two children.
