National-level athlete dies in road accident

Abhishek, a javelin thrower, was among two killed

A 20-year-old national-level athlete was among two persons killed when a speeding mini-truck rammed an auto-rickshaw which then hit a motorcycle. The accident took place on Vande Matram Marg here on Thursday. Two others were injured in the accident.

According to the police, the accident took place around 2-15 p.m. when Abhishek, a javelin thrower along with his friend Brijesh, a hammer thrower, were going towards Karol Bagh in an auto-rickshaw driven by 60-year-old Jasvinder.

“A Haryana Roadways bus was plying in front of their auto-rickshaw. Due to traffic jam, the bus driver and Jasvinder, slowed down their respective vehicles but a speeding mini-truck rammed it from behind. A motorcyclist was also hit by it,” said a police officer.

Jasvinder was killed on the spot while Abhishek was declared dead at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Brijesh and the motorcyclist Hemeat are undergoing treatment in the hospital.

A cash of death due to rash and negligence driving has been registered.
