Over 4,000 nominations have been filed for elections to the 272 municipal wards of the Capital, according to the Delhi State Election Commission.
Monday being the last day for filing nominations, the offices of the 72 returning offices (ROs) appointed by the State Election Commission saw candidates rushing to beat the 6 p.m. deadline.
As per the State Election Commission, as of 11 p.m., a total of 4,392 nominations had been filed, of which 3,415 were filed on Monday itself.
A cumulative total of 1,703, 1,725 and 964 nominations were filed for the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation, respectively.
Beating the rush
While nominations for the April 23 polls began on March 27, the majority of candidates filed their elections affidavits on the last day. With two of the major players, the BJP and the Congress, only announcing their candidates over the weekend and on Monday morning, many did not have an option.
As usual, candidates filed multiple copies of their nominations, which will be filtered out.
Independent nominees
Of the total, candidates of the Aam Aadmi Party, the BJP and the Congress filed 1,033, 565 and 544 nominations, respectively. Nominations from Independent candidates were 1,439.
