Mumbai Metro finally gets a committee to fix fares

January 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 10:43 am IST - MUMBAI:

After seven months and several strictures and two adverse judgments by the court, the Union government has finally woken up to the woes of Mumbaikars who now pay double for a Metro ride.

A fare fixation committee, chaired by Justice (Retd.) E. Padmanabhan, has been appointed, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted on Saturday. Too little and too late, responded activists.

“Mumbaikars have to pay double for their Metro ride now due to the inaction of the Union government. It happened because the government failed to appoint the fare fixation committee at the right time, and because the Metro Act allows the operating body to decide its fares,” RTI activist Anil Galgali said.

He has written to the Union and the State governments seeking an amendment to the Act.

Mumbai Metro fares doubled from the Rs. 10-20 band to the Rs. 10-40 band after the Bombay High Court allowed the operator, Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd. (MMOPL), to increase the fares this week.
