The mortal remains of renowned strategic expert K Subrahmanyam, who died here on Wednesday, were cremated here today.
A host of dignitaries, including AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi and Defence Minister A K Antony, were present at the Lodhi Road crematorium where the cremation took place.
The founding Director of major strategic think-tank Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), Mr. Subrahmanyam, is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.
Among those present at the crematorium were former and serving diplomats, top officials of the services, strategic experts and top government officials, besides former IDSA Directors Air Commodore Jasjit Singh, K Santhanam and C Uday Bhaskar.
Described as the “the doyen of the strategic affairs community in India”, Mr. Subrahmanyam was considered “one of the key architects” of India’s security policy doctrine, including the nuclear policy.
He had headed several international and government committees, including the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Global Strategic Developments, the Joint Intelligence Committee and the Kargil Review Committee. The recommendations of the Kargil Committee had led to large—scale restructuring of Indian intelligence network.
Mr. Subrahmanyam was also the Convenor of the first National Security Council Advisory Board (NSCAB) which drafted India’s Nuclear Doctrine that now governs all policy aspects relating to usage and deployment of the nuclear arsenal.
