A Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) employee was beaten and three vehicles were torched by a mob protesting against the demolition drive being carried out by the civic body in Basai village here on Thursday.
The trouble broke out when a MCG demolition squad led by Joint Commissioner Veena Hooda and accompanied by a police team reached Basai village around noon and began demolishing the unauthorised structures. When the squad members continued with the demolition drive despite opposition by the locals, the villagers turned violent and began throwing stones on them. The mob then torched a tractor and two more vehicles, including the official vehicle of Ms. Hooda, and attacked an MCG employee with an iron rod. The angry villagers later blocked the Gurgaon-Dhankot road and staged a demonstration against the alleged high-handedness of the municipal authorities. They raised slogans against the State Government and local municipal authorities.
The mob accused the officials of harassing the locals for carrying out construction on their own land, but not taking any action against politically connected persons and big companies.
A case has been registered against the villagers under different sections of the Indian Penal Code. Ten people have been named in the First Information Report.
