A 22-year-old mentally challenged woman was allegedly raped by a 23-year-old in north Delhi’s Kashmere Gate on July 2. The accused was arrested from the spot.

The police were informed about the incident after a passer-by, who suspected something was amiss, called them.

‘She was struggling’

“He saw her struggling and the man following her. Suspecting that something was amiss, he called us,” said a senior police officer.

The police reached the spot, and the woman and the accused were taken to Kashmere Gate police station. She managed to inform a female police officer that she was raped by one Rahul. He was later identified as a resident of Kucha Mohtar Khan. “He is unemployed and lives with his family,” said the officer.

The man has been sent to judicial custody, while the woman, who is homeless, has been sent to the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences for treatment (IHBAS).
