By-elections to 13 municipal wards in Delhi threw up disappointment for the ruling-BJP while the Aam Aadmi Party made a lukewarm debut in civic polls and the Congress made a comeback of sorts.
The AAP won five of the 13 wards, the Congress won in four and the BJP in three. An Independent candidate won in one of the wards, but the Congress claimed he would join the party.
A total of 3.06 lakh people had come out to vote on a sweltering Sunday. In the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, there were seven wards up for grabs. The AAP won four (Vikas Nagar, Matiala, Nanakpura, Tekhand); the BJP and the Congress won one each, Nawada and Munirka respectively; and Independent candidate Rajendra Singh Tanwar won in Bhati.
In the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, where four wards went to polls, the BJP won in two (Shalimar Bagh North and Wazirpur), while the Congress and AAP won one each, Quamruddin Nagar and Ballimaran respectively.
For the East Delhi Municipal Corporation, both the wards that were up for by-polls, Khichripur and Jhilmil, went to the Congress.
