An assistant zonal inspector with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi Government for allegedly demanding bribe and accepting Rs.5,000 from a bus operator by falsely accusing him of not having deposited property tax for his office premises last year.
Himmat Singh, who runs his business from an office at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, lodged a complaint with the ACB alleging that he was being harassed by an MCD official posted with the Assessor and Collector Office of the civic body.
The bus operator said a notice was also issued to him stating that he had defaulted on property tax last year.
Himmat Singh told the MCD officials that a sum of Rs.12,000 was paid as property tax through the Internet last year by his father.
He also produced the transaction receipt to substantiate it. However, the MCD data record did not have any such entry.
Despite that he was allegedly asked to pay up Rs.25,000 to avoid any penalty.
Acting on the complaint, the ACB laid a trap and arrested Kishan Singh Negi, an assistant zonal inspector posted at the MCD office on Rajpur Road, when he was purportedly receiving initial payment of Rs.5,000 from the complainant on Monday.
The ACB suspects that the online payment made by the complainant had not been updated.
