MCD hospital doctors, nurses threaten strike over pay

Resident doctors and nursing staff at municipal hospitals under East and North corporations have threatened to strike work from Wednesday in case their salaries are not paid.

Salaries of doctors and nurses have reportedly not been paid for February. The State Health Department has said that they would “definitely look into the issue in case the medical staff approach them for help”.

The three corporations have 10 hospitals, including Kasturba, Swami Dayanand and Hindu Rao Hospitals, which cater to a large section of residents and also those from nearby areas.

A doctor at Hindu Rao Hospital noted that the strike call will be given only after a general body meeting on April 1. “In some hospitals, salaries haven’t been paid since February. We will go on an indefinite strike because the corporations have to understand that they have a duty towards their staff.”

Meanwhile, Class III and IV employees at municipal hospitals have been on an on and off strike over the past eight months over delay in disbursement of salaries. “The corporation is forcing us to take a more drastic stand this time. Our salaries are paid only after we go on strike,’’ said an employee.

A senior Delhi government official — also a senior Aam Aadmi Party functionary — said on Monday that corruption is rampant in the BJP-ruled civic bodies and, therefore, “they are not even able to pay salaries to corporation hospital staff”.

“Are the corporations really functioning?’’ questioned the official, adding that they were a fine example of how mismanagement and corruption can kill an organisation.

Safai karamcharis in East Delhi have struck work for a week over delay in disbursement of salaries for three months.
