RSS-affiliated Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) on Saturday said that the Maruti management is equally responsible for the death of Human Resources (HR) manager at the automobile manufacturer’s Manesar plant for which the court had recently handed out life sentences to 13 Maruti workers.

‘Repeated instigation’

The trade union said that the Haryana government should approach the Gurgaon court, which gave the verdict on March 18, to present the workers’ version and ask for a review of the judgment.

“This decision has been taken by listening to the arguments of both the parties but we insist the State revisit the case impartially by understanding the cause of the problem, that the management is equally responsible for this situation,” BMS General Secretary Virjesh Upadhyay said in a statement. Mr. Upadhyay said the incident took place “due to repeated instigation and provocation by supervisors.”

Foreign investments

BMS said that the State government favoured the Maruti management to “invite foreign investments without even thinking of the violation of workers’ fundamental rights.” “We expect at least the State government to assist the poor workers in bringing their views in front of the legal authorities,” Mr. Upadhyay said.

The district court in Gurgaon had sentenced 13 workers of Maruti Udyog to life imprisonment for killing the HR manager of the car manufacturer during labour unrest at its plant in Manesar in 2012 where about 90 executives were also injured in the violence. Over a dozen workers’ associations and trade unions from across the country gathered at Jantar Mantar on Friday in support of the 13 Maruti workers.
