A man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly stabbing to death a 20-year-old in Rohini’s Begumpur on Saturday, the police said on Monday.

They said the victim’s alleged relationship with his married cousin did not go down well with the accused, who was the married cousin’s childhood sweetheart and still in love with her.

Palam Colony resident Aakash was allegedly stabbed by Neeraj on Saturday night. The accused was arrested from his hideout in Shiv Vihar on Sunday, the police said.

Aakash lived with his uncle in Rohini’ Sector 20. The uncle's daughter, who is Aakash’s cousin, and her husband also live in the same house.

Aakash left home to run an errand on Saturday night. When he failed to return, the family started looking for him. His body was found in Sector 23 on Sunday.

Questioning revealed the possibility of Neeraj’s involvement in the murder. The police said Neeraj and Meenakshi were childhood sweethearts but could not get married because of his family.

“Neeraj came to know that Meenakshi and Aakash were in a relationship. Jealous, he decided to kill Aakash,” said a senior police officer.

The police said Neeraj became the prime suspect when he was found missing from his Sultanpuri residence. He was nabbed from Shiv Vihar with help of human and technical surveillance.

Neeraj allegedly told the police that he waited for Aakash to leave the house on Saturday. Neeraj took him to a service road near the sewage pumping station around 8.45 p.m,. and slit his throat before stabbing him multiple times.
