A 28-year-old man allegedly murdered his sister-in-law after suspecting her of being involved in an illicit relationship with another man at their residence in northwest Delhi's Mukundpur on Monday.

Victim woken up

After the incident the accused, Navi, turned himself in and confessed that he had strangulated her to death, said the police. The victim, identified as Gudiya (30), was married to the brother of the accused. The police later recovered her body and sent it for post mortem at the local mortuary.

A senior police officer said the incident came to light on April 16. Gudiya, a mother of four children, used to stay with her in laws and husband at their house in Mukundpur area.

It is alleged that Navi woke Gudiya from her sleep and then convinced her to come to the terrace on the pretext of wanting to have a conversation. Gudiya’s husband and children were asleep at the time of the incident, said the police.

‘Not remorseful’

On their way to the terrace, Navi started an argument with her and confronted her with the allegations, the police said. When she refuted his charges, Navi in a fit of rage strangulated the woman with her dupatta.

After killing Gudiya, Nabi went downstairs and woke up Gudiya’s husband and their children.

He confessed that he killed the woman and then approached the local police station.

“He was not remorseful when he surrendered before the police and he narrated the entire incident. He maintained that she was in a relationship with another man which had affected his brother’s domestic life adversely. In fact, a few days before her murder, he confronted the woman and broke her cell phone so that she would not communicate with her alleged lover,” said the officer.

Based on his statement, a case of murder was registered and he was formally arrested. The body has now been handed over to her relatives after the post-mortem.
