A 48-year-old man allegedly committed suicide at north Delhi’s GTB Nagar metro station by consuming poison on Thursday morning. In his suicide note, he alleged that his wife was in an illicit relationship with a police constable.
The man, who was identified as Sanjay Sharma, a resident of Burari’s Sant Nagar, entered from gate number 3 of the metro station and sat on the stairs leading to the platform, said a CISF officer.
“He had consumed something poisonous. As soon as he sat, he fell unconscious. A person sitting nearby immediately called the officials,” he said.
Suicide note
Mr. Sharma was then taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital at 11.40 a.m., where he was declared dead on arrival. The official told The Hindu that he was in possession of a suicide note, in which he had written that he was upset because of his wife’s illicit relationship with a police constable. The suicide note also stated that the duo refused to end the relationship despite his repeated requests.
Wife says ‘alcoholic’
Sources said the suicide note was addressed to “Police Commissioner, Barakhamba”. His wife, however, told the police that Sharma was an alcoholic and used to physically abuse her.
“He was a tuberculosis patient and never stayed at home. His wife told us that he used to beat her whenever he came home,” said a senior police officer.
The officer told The Hindu that the constable mentioned in the suicide note had detained the deceased once after Mr. Sharma’s wife had complained of physical violence. “There might be no case of abetment to suicide after Sharma’s family members were questioned,” said the police officer, alleging that the constable had no role to play. Mr. Sharma is survived by his wife, an 18-year-old son and a 14-year-old daughter.
