A man has been arrested for the murder of a 63-year-old man by the crime branch, the police said on Saturday.

Sonu Singh was allegedly against his sister’s relationship with victim Herald Peter’s son Gladwin. According to Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav, Sonu was planning to kill Gladwin, whom he held responsible for making his sister’s life a ‘living hell’.

On June 12, Vijay Vihar police station received information regarding Herald’s murder. Enquiry revealed that Gladwin’s partner’s brother was absconding.

Investigations revealed Sonu was working in a hotel. On Thursday, a team tracked and detained him. Following sustained interrogation, Sonu admitted to murdering Herald.

“He claimed Gladwin had beaten up his sister several times in front of him. More recently, she was asking their father for money to purchase a property in Delhi. He thought Gladwin’s family was forcing her to ask her for the money so they could buy the property,” Mr. Yadav added.

Sonu had arrived in the Capital in search of a job over a month ago. He witnessed the condition his sister was living in due to Gladwin while staying at their residence during his job hunt. The accused belongs to Chhapra in Bihar.

On June 11, Sonu was alone at home with Herald. After consuming liquor, the accused started arguing with Herald, before strangling him.

“Sonu also stabbed Herald in the chest with a poker to ensure his death. He then ransacked the house to make it seem like a scene of robbery gone wrong in order to mislead the police,” Mr. Yadav said.

According to him, Sonu did not leave Delhi as he was also planning to kill Gladwin too. He initially worked at a dhaba in Naraina. After working there for about 10 days, he moved to Karol Bagh, where he took up a housekeeping job.
