A man has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting and killing a seven-year-old girl in north-east Delhi’s New Usmanpur last month.
Mohd. Ibral, who was a neighbour of the victim, allegedly lured her to his residence on June 21 on the pretext of watching television and forced himself on her. As news spread that the girl had been abducted, Ibral got scared and smothered her to death the same evening, said the police. “He then placed the body inside his wife’s trunk and threw it into a canal in Kartar Nagar,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-east) Ajit Kumar Singla.
The body was recovered from the canal on June 28.
Neighbours to the rescue
The police nabbed the accused on the basis of a salwar kameez and a blanket found inside the trunk.
“Photographs of the items were shown to neighbours, who identified them as belonging to Ibral’s wife,” said Mr. Singla. A raid was conducted at his house on Thursday, and he was arrested. “We have recovered his slippers, an empty whisky bottle and clothes worn by him on the day of the incident,” Mr. Singla said, adding that Ibral was inebriated when he committed the crime.
