A young man was allegedly duped of Rs.45,000 at a bank in South Delhi by a stranger who diverted his attention by claiming that some of the currency notes he was carrying were fake.
Last Thursday, the victim – Amit Bhuneshwar Pathak – had gone to the Corporation Bank’s Mahipalpur branch when the incident took place. In his statement to the police, Mr. Pathak purportedly claimed that he was carrying an amount in excess of Rs.1.5 lakh to deposit at the bank.
“As he was filling the deposit form at the bank’s counter, an unidentified person approached him and said that some of the notes the victim was carrying looked fake. Falling for this, the victim requested him to take a look at the currency notes and he obliged. A few moments later, the suspect returned the bundle of notes to Mr. Pathak claiming that they were genuine,” said a police source.
However, when the victim went to deposit the cash, his attention was drawn to difference in the amount that he had mentioned in the deposit slip and the actual amount he handed over to the staff at the counter. Realising that he had been cheated, the victim called his friends and they demanded that they be shown the CCTV footage. While the cameras contained the footage of the suspect, his face was not clearly visible due to camera angles, said the complaint. The police have registered a case and investigations are on to identify and nab the suspect.
