Taken into custody for a scuffle, a 35-year-old man allegedly tried to jump off a PCR, fatally hitting his head against a road divider in Noida. Alleging that he was killed by the police, the victim’s family members, along with locals, blocked traffic in Noida’s Sector 60 on Friday morning.
The dead man has been identified as Vinod Kumar, a resident of Noida’s Mamura village. He dealt in supply of liquor in the area.
On Thursday night, Kumar was involved in a violent scuffle with Sunil Sharma, an eatery owner. Both were in an inebriated state at the time of the scuffle. Kumar’s family has blamed Sharma for misbehaving with Kumar’s niece, the alleged reason behind the scuffle.
In any case, the police reached the spot and loaded both the men in a PCR van and took them to Noida Phase-3 police station where Sharma gave a written complaint against Kumar.
A senior police officer claimed that the duo was being taken to the district hospital in Noida Sector 31 for a medical examination when a drunk Kumar jumped off the PCR van.
“Kumar’s head hit the road divider because of which he sustained serious injuries. We rushed him to the district hospital from where he was referred to GTB Hospital in Delhi. He succumbed during the early hours of Friday,” said an officer.
Once Kumar’s family members were informed along with other residents of Mamura village, they gathered at an intersection in sector 60 and indulged in stone pelting and blocked traffic before the police dispersed them.
