A 27-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly kidnapping and killing his 11-year-old brother-in-law to take revenge from his wife and father-in-law, the police said on Wednesday, adding that he was arrested within five hours of the complaint being filed.

Lalit, a resident of north-east Delhi’s Bhajanpura, was arrested after his wife and father-in-law told the police that they suspected him of kidnapping the boy.

Tale of revenge

“They told the police that Lalit wanted revenge as his wife wasn’t ready to live with him anymore. Her father was always against him because it was a love marriage,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-east) Ajit Kumar Singla.

The father and daughter approached the police around 8 p.m. on Sunday stating that the boy, a resident of Ghonda, had been missing since 3 p.m. after he had gone for a Janmashtami programme in the locality.

“A PCR call was received at Bhajanpura police station stating that the boy was untraceable. His father and sister suspected Lalit’s involvement in the incident,” said the officer.

Teams were formed to nab the suspect, who was found in the locality.

During interrogation, Lalit told the police that he had taken the boy to a forest area in Alipur and left him there. It was discovered later that he was lying to mislead the police.

“Lalit took the boy on the pretext of buying kites for him. Search teams were constituted and sent to Alipur along with Lalit to look for the minor but in vain,” said Mr. Singla.

The police interrogated him again. This time, he confessed to having strangulated the boy and leaving the body under some bushes in Narela industrial area. The body was recovered.

Marital discord

Mr. Singla said Lalit and his wife got married five years ago against her father’s wishes. A few years into the marriage, the couple started fighting over petty issues.

“His wife used to shift to her parent’s home every few months but always returned. This time, she had not returned for the past one-and-a-half months, which made him furious,” he said, adding that their case is pending in a mediation court.
