Maliwal takes up safety of women with top cop

August 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 05:27 pm IST - New Delhi:

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal on Tuesday met Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi to discuss women safety in the Capital. Earlier, Ms. Maliwal had asked for details on the number of crimes against women, but the police didn’t reply to her. Mr. Bassi has assured her full cooperation in enhancing the safety of women.

“Met Police Commissioner and Special CP Law and Order today. They assured support and access to data on molestations that DCW had sought,” she said in a tweet.

Ms. Maliwal had written to Mr. Bassi on August 1 seeking information on cases of crime against women in Delhi to conduct a study on it and to give recommendations to the Centre and the State government on women security in the wake of the Anand Parbat murder.

According to DCW officials, the two major issues raised during the meeting were release of 15 women from a women shelter home and support from the police for the commission’s initiatives for sex workers at GB road.

“The Police Commissioner assured the DCW of support on both the issues. We wanted 15 such women, whose stipulated duration of stay at the women shelter home was over, should be released.”

She had on Monday written to the Delhi Police demanding that they expedite the release of 15 girls from the women shelter home, where she had conducted a surprise check last week.

“During her visit to GB road, the DCW chief had observed that there are two kinds of issues there: security of the women, who are either trafficked there or forced into the trade, and lack of police support for several rehabilitation initiatives. We have been assured of full cooperation,” the officials said.

“The Delhi Police have also agreed to our demand of deploying a special team who will work in coordination with the DCW in the area,” they said. She also met parents of Minakshi, the 19-year-old, who was murdered in Anand Parbat, to discuss the proceedings of the case.
