Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal on Friday sought strict laws to deal with NRI men who abandon their Indian wives.
Stating that all marriages must be registered, the DCW chief said, “The current law is not strict enough to deal with NRI grooms, who leave their brides here and run abroad. It is difficult to get them back to the country. So it is extremely crucial to amend the law.”
Expert committee
Ms. Maliwal said she was part of an expert committee set up by Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on NRI marriage disputes.
Recommendations made
Nearly 12,000 cases and 55 recommendations have been made to the Central and Delhi governments by the DCW in connection with NRI marriage disputes.
Women’s helpline 181 reportedly received 3.15 lakh calls on the issue.
NRI commissions
Giving the example of Punjab, which has many cases of NRI marriage disputes and NRI commissions, the DCW chairperson said other States too should have NRI panels, which are as “powerful” as Human Rights Commissions.
Ms. Maliwal plans to compile all complaints on NRI marriage disputes from other States and send them to the recently formed committee.
