Maker of documentary on Muzaffarnagar riots dead

August 26, 2014 10:09 am | Updated 10:09 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Journalist-turned-documentary filmmaker Shubhradeep Chakravorty (42) died in the Capital on Monday after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

He was in the news recently after his latest film En Dino Muzaffarnagar – focussing on the riots in the district last year and the politics of it – was refused clearance for screening by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). His application to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) against the CBFC decision was also turned down.

With his documentary film failing to get screened in thefilm festival circuit of the country, the filmmaker had been trying to get some screenings done overseas to raise awareness about the Muzaffarnagar riots worldwide.

At the time of applying to the FCAT, Mr. Chakravorty had in a Facebook post on July 30 said: “Two hours and twenty seven minutes long En Dino Muzaffarnagar by Shubhradeep Chakravorty & Meera Chaudhary is going to be recorded in the history as the first documentary film banned under Prime Minister Modi. Gagging order came on 30th June… We will not go down without a fight.’’

The documentary was shown at Mumbai’s Prithvi Theatre in April. En Dino Muzaffarnagar was Mr. Chakraborty’s fifth documentary film after he switched to filmmaking from journalism in 2002 to probe the events that led to the Godhra carnage and the subsequent rioting.
