Displaying how important the upcoming municipal elections in Delhi are to the party, the Congress is bringing out its big guns, starting with party vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who will address a workers’ convention on Tuesday.
Going all out
The party, which after 15 years of power in the Capital was left with no MLAs in the Delhi Assembly in the 2015 elections and no MPs from Delhi in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, is hoping to revive itself. Having been the principal opposition in the municipal corporations since 2007, the Congress now has an eye on Delhi.
For the first time, the party has involved senior leaders and former Union Ministers in the process of drafting its manifesto for the civic polls.
On Monday, former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and former Minister of State (Power) Jyotiraditya Scindia gave their inputs in the Delhi Congress’ plan to make the civic bodies self-reliant.
‘A different platform’
Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Chidambaram said that “all elections were important”. “We want to give the people of Delhi a different platform this time,” he said.
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Maken added that it wasn’t about the elections, but “about Delhi”. “Delhi deserves better. We are the party that can offer experience and solutions to improve civic administration,” said Mr. Maken.
