The incident in which a six-year-old was raped by her mother’s live-in partner in south Delhi’s Saket was allegedly brought to the notice of the authorities by the victim’s neighbour.
She informed the family, the Delhi Commission for Women and the Delhi Police after she “sensed something wrong with the girl”.
The 35-year-old told The Hindu that the incident was like reliving a nightmare for her because her own daughter was a victim of sexual abuse four years ago.
“I have gone through this which is why I made sure the girl is rescued before it happens to her again. And it’s not just about her. It’s important to put such people behind bars because they are a threat to society if they roam free,” she said.
Caught in time
The woman told The Hindu that her daughter, now a 12-year-old, was nine when she was taken to a forest near Prahladpur, where they used to reside back then, by a 28-year-old neighbour where he tried to rape her. “We figured it out in time and all my neighbours helped me find my daughter. Thankfully, she was saved before something bad could happen. The man is now in jail,” she said, adding that her daughter was traumatised for as long as a year after the incident.
The woman, who separated from her husband over 10 years ago, works as a house help.
She resides in Khanpur with her three sons while her two daughters were sent to a hostel in north Delhi’s Tis Hazari two years ago where they now stay and study.
