Five officials were suspended after Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung went on surprise inspections on Wednesday and found unsatisfactory conditions on implementation of the Swacchh Bharat Mission. Among the five officials, two received written warnings, one was transferred, while another received a show-cause notice.

The surprise checks that began as early as 9.30 a.m. saw Mr. Jung visit eight hospitals, 20 schools and six Municipal Deputy Commissioners’ offices across the city.

The surprise checks will be a weekly affair, he said. Further, the Delhi administration appointed a senior secretary-level IAS officer as the nodal officer for implementing the mission.

While Chief Secretary D.M. Spolia will issue a show-cause notice to Municipal Deputy Commissioner (Civil Lines) and a written warning to the Municipal Deputy Commissioner (Shahdara South), Shahdara North Deputy Commissioner, and two assistant engineers from the Public Works Department who are in-charge of maintenance of two schools have been suspended.

After the visit, the principal of Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, JJ Colony, Wazirpur, both the principal and vice-principal of Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya, Rani Jhansi Road, have been suspended. Besides, the contract of cleanliness at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, Rohini, given to the current contractor has been cancelled. Officials said a written warning would be served to the Medical Superintendent of NC Joshi Hospital, Karol Bagh.

Mr. Jung visited the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in Khichripur where he monitored the cleanliness of public areas, reception and wards. He also visited the office of the Deputy Commissioner (Shahdara South) under the East Delhi Municipal Corporation and inspected the office.

A detailed action-taken report by respective departments and organisations will be sent to them by the Lieutenant-Governor’s Secretariat. “These surprise visits will become a weekly affair. I along with my officers shall be leading these visits to various departments and offices every week. The Swachch Bharat Mission is an important mission and anyone found lacking shall be shown no mercy. Let this be a warning. More action will follow,” Mr. Jung said in a statement.
