Let women in slums use toilets for free: BJP

In a letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal, the BJP on Monday demanded that women living in the Capital’s slums be granted “freedom from toilet-usage charges”.

BJP National Secretary Sardar R. P. Singh released the letter in which the party sought to draw the CM’s attention towards the “problem of women being forced to defecate in the open” due to usage charges in place at public toilets around jhuggi clusters.

“Even after 70 years of Independence, women are forced to relieve themselves in the open. The slum dwellers are forced to defecate in the open largely because of the fee charged for toilet usage, which can be more than ₹300-₹400 a month for women,” Mr. Singh said.

The senior leader requested the CM and the L-G to consider granting the residents “freedom from paying usage charges in all public toilets”.

“Please do away with the charges and arrange for public bathing spaces for women in all the 675 jhuggi clusters. During my 10-month tenure as an MLA, I had arranged for eight public bathing spaces in Sangam Colony cluster (near Naraina Bus Depot),” he added.
