A day after a 19-year-old married woman was kidnapped by her relatives from inside the Karkardooma court complex, the police on Friday found that her family is absconding.

The teenager, who was a Muslim, converted into Hinduism to marry her childhood love and had been facing a threat to her life from her family. On Thursday, the couple had come to the court to seek protection. When they were entering the court for recording their statement with the magistrate, the woman’s family came inside the court complex and took her away.

A case of kidnapping was registered with Farsh Bazar police station on Thursday in this regard. The police raided the woman’s house and that of her relatives on Friday and found them all locked.

Her husband, Sonu, who is in a state of shock since Thursday, said: “My wife is pregnant and I am really worried about her. I am afraid that her family will do something to her. They had always been threatening to cause harm to both of us.”

In a related development, the Delhi Police provided security to the boy after court direction. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Savitri on Thursday, while expressing concern over the woman’s safety, had directed the Delhi Police to step up efforts to trace her.

“A constable has been assigned for the boy’s security round the clock. The police patrolling party near his residence has also been asked to check on him on a regular basis,” a police officer said.

The court has also sought an investigation report from the police by Sunday. The woman, Aashi (name changed after marriage), married Sonu on December 23 against the wishes of her family. Under threat from her family members, she decided to register a complaint with the local police in Seemapuri on January 2.
