Jawaharlal Nehru University has suspended a student for allegedly molesting another student on the campus on Tuesday. The accused has been arrested by the police.

The accused student is a resident of Brahmaputra hostel and was suspended by the administration immediately after the incident came to light.

Fact-finding panel

The university has also constituted a fact-finding committee that is being headed by Chemistry professor Shyaman Goswami and includes the JNU teachers’ union president D.K. Lobiyal. A woman hostel warden, Ms. Meenakshi, has also been included in the all-male committee for maintaining neutrality.

Students in the university said that the Brahmaputra hostel is located at the far end of the university and houses only men, mostly Ph. D students. The incident was reported to have happened on Monday with students getting to know about it only on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the university students’ union said it was waiting for the facts to emerge before reacting in any manner.

“It is a very sensitive issue; we got to know about it very late on Tuesday. Therefore we cannot take a position before we know the facts. We will wait for the facts to emerge and take a position on Wednesday,” said JNUSU president V. Lenin Kumar.
