Jamia withdraws notice to student

July 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:48 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Students of Jamia Millia Islamia went on a day-long hunger strike in protest against the varsity on Wednesday after it issued a show cause to a PhD student for allegedly giving misleading information to the media about issues being faced by students.

The student had informed a media outlet about issues like water-logging near the hostel and lack of chairs in the library.

“Satisfactory”

Withdrawing the notice following the strike, a communication to the student read: “Your response was examined by the Dean of Students Welfare and the Proctorial Office and was found to be satisfactory. Hence, the show-cause has been withdrawn.”

The notice issued to the student by the Chief Proctor Mehtab Alam had read: “It has been reported that you gave a statement that there was shortage of chairs in the library room… Again, you have put allegation on Jamia administration that the hostel campus is flooded with water and administration is coolly sleeping… Such irresponsible behaviour of yours of giving misleading accounts amounts to unbecoming a PhD student of Jamia… Take note that your above said unlawful acts are in gross violation of the rules and regulations, and are being viewed seriously by the authorities.”
