Jamia prof faces action for ‘anti-employee’ plea

February 05, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Jamia Teachers’ Association has terminated the membership of a professor for sending a representation to President Pranab Mukherjee alleging irregularities in the university’s functioning.

Obaid Siddiqui, professor at the Jamia Millia Islamia’s Mass Communication Centre, was suspended on Wednesday.

Terming Mr. Siddiqui’s representation as “anti-employee”, the Jamia Teachers’ Association passed a resolution to “terminate his primary membership of JTA and expel him for six years with immediate effect”.

The university has around 900 teachers, of which over 800 are members of the teachers’ association.

The professor had sent a petition to the President, who is Visitor to the university, alleging financial and administrative irregularities in the varsity’s functioning.

He had also objected to the introduction of five per cent seats for wards of Jamia Millia Islamia employees, despite the Delhi High Court having quashed a similar arrangement in 1997.

Earlier this week, the professor had sought police protection saying that he had been threatened with dire consequences for sending the petition.
