Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on Wednesday launched a diploma course in Unani Pharmacy and inaugurated a Unani medicine laboratory and a mobile van dispensary in recognition of the services rendered to the field of Unani Medicine and to the university by one of its founders Hakim Ajmal Khan.
The university informed that 35 students have enrolled for the two year self-financed diploma course, which was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Talat Ahmad.
‘An apt tribute’
Prof. Ahmad said that the launch of the course in Unani medicine is an apt tribute to the legacy of Mr. Khan, who was one of the biggest names in Unani medicine. “This is an old system of medicine in which hakims would not divulge the method of preparation and contents. As a result, much information could not be passed down to future generations,” said Prof. Ahmad.
He added that the university hopes to collect prescriptions of hakims and collate them to use them with other allied sciences and give Unani medicine a new lease of life. The university plans to allocate a dedicated space for a herbal garden and ensure that teaching and research in Unani are housed in one building.
