The courtyard at the India Habitat Centre is sporting a new look, thanks to an exhibition of iron installations by city-based muralist Gopal Namjoshi.
Namjoshi has recycled a variety of iron objects to create his installations that take the form of trees, insects, animals, birds and humans. The artist has used discarded objects to create newer stories for them and allow the objects created to co-exist and converse ecologically.
He has re-created these life-size installations, assembled in a park-like scene complete with a man relaxing on a chair and surrounded by these ‘living’ creatures.
Namjoshi says the idea came to him while he was returning to the city from a rural area. It was then that he realized the charm of rural life was missing in our “uber urbane” lives. The creations are titled “Coexistance: You/ME/Them/Us, Ecological Conversations”.
Namjoshi says his creations, built from iron and steel, are brawny and tough on the outside but soft on the inside. As they are a reflection of life in it various forms, they retain their true nature of innocence and lively expressions, he adds.
The original beauty of the creatures can be seen reflecting out of the metallic lifeless forms because their heart bears the true spirit and not mechanical, feels the artist.
The installation has been curated by Alka Pande. It will be on display till April 5
