In rescuing 28-year-old Manisha Devi in the flood-hit Motihari, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team saved not one, but two lives. For, soon after she was evacuated, she delivered a child on the rescue boat.

Ms.Devi, a resident of Patjilwa village, was in an advance stage of pregnancy and developed severe labour pain on Monday. The circle officer of Chiraiya Block immediately informed the NDRF, after which a team headed by Inspector Vinay Kumar rushed to the woman’s house.

In the nick of time

“After assessing the woman’s condition, the NDRF team decided to take her to the nearby hospital by boat. During evacuation, she delivered a baby boy while the boat was in the Budhi Gandak river,” a statement issued by the NDRF read.

The mother and son were later taken to a government hospital at Chiraiya in Motihari. Both are said to be stable.

An NDRF officer said most of their men were trained in a medical course, wherein they were taught to deal with pregnancy and childbirth cases, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, etc .

NDRF Commandant Vijay Sinha said this was the third case where a woman had delivered a baby on a rescue boat while being evacuated from a flood-hit village in Bihar.
