Rachna, 32, is a daily wager. Divorced and the mother of three children, she has moved her place of residence twice in the last two years and isn’t sure about where she can get her Aadhaar card made. She and her children are among the many who seem to have slipped through the fault lines of the programme.
“Everyone talks of this card and how it will soon become a must for getting subsidised food grain and sugar. I am getting worried about how to get one. So far I haven’t had a problem. My children have got admission into private schools through the EWS scheme and we get some help from the State government, having an Aadhaar card has not been mandatory. But, I hope that someone will help us get this card,” says Rachna.
She is also worried about the government suddenly cutting off subsidies linked to the EWS category. “One day the government can say that you are not in the counting. I will ensure that I get an Aadhaar card made. Having shifted home we have no residence proof, which has proved to be a hindrance. I have to work around this problem now,’’ she said.
