Helpline for crimes against animals

January 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Humane Society International/India has launched a national tip line in an effort to crackdown on criminal and inhumane activity against animals.

Anyone with information on persons involved in illegal animal fighting like dog fighting, cockfighting and bullfighting is urged to call +91-7674-922044.

HSI/India managing-director N.G. Jayasimha said: “Animal fighting is a cruel criminal activity, and we plan to root it out from every dark corner where it festers. We encourage anyone with information about animal fighting to call this tip line to help us put the violators in jail and to put a stop to the cruelty.”

Last month, HSI/India worked with the local authorities to stop cockfights in Maharashtra and Odisha. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, makes it a cognizable offense for any person who incites any animal to fight or organises animal fights. The Bombay High Court had prohibited animal fighting in 1996 in its decision in the People for Animals vs State of Goa case.
